Best Smiles: Superhero Edition
What superhero would be complete without a superhero smile? Here’s a look at some of the most powerful smiles among the Hollywood superhero world, and the actors who own them.
Chris Evans (Captain America)
Best known for his roles as Steve Rogers / Captain America of the Marvel series as well as Johnny Storm / Human Torch in the Fantastic Four series, Evans had a couple perks going for him, both for being an actor (his mother is an artistic director at a youth theater) and for having great teeth (his father is a dentist). He first donned the trademark superhero tights in In 2011, when he played Captain America in Captain America:The First Avenger.
Ben Affleck (Daredevil and Batman)
When he was young, Affleck had buck teeth. Over the course of the years, Affleck underwent several cosmetic dentistry procedures to improve his pearly whites, which allowed him to land more heroic roles. Rumor has it that Armageddon director Michael Bay felt that Affleck’s small, unevenly spaced teeth took away from his credibility as a heroic figure, and as a result, Affleck spent $20K to improve his smile to heroic status. Apparently, it worked, because Affleck has portrayed both Daredevil and Batman in recent years.
Christopher Reeve (Superman)
It’s hard to imagine that the Man of Steel was almost played by someone besides Reeve and his super smile. Other front-runners up for the role of Superman in the 1978 film were Nick Nolte and Jon Voight after the role was turned down by Warren Beatty and Robert Redford. Reeve was an almost unknown actor at the time. He had only done one other film and a television soap opera at that point in his career. Reeve donned the role for the original and three sequels and became an international star as a result.
Hugh Jackman (Wolverine)
Best known for his long-running portrayal of Wolverine in the X-Men films, Jackman was named “the sexiest man alive” by People magazine in 2008. The Australian star once publicly stated that he had shocking teeth. During an exam, his dentist once told him he had gray teeth. Jackman underwent a whitening treatment that took care of the gray color and still preserved his rugged charm.
